Story Selling in Launch & Sales Emails
APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY | YOUTUBE
Old launch advice was to include lots of FAQ and social proof emails in your sales sequence.
However, when was the last time you read a list of FAQs in an email and thought, "Yep, I'm buying that"? Probably never. And yet FAQ emails still show up in launch sequence after launch sequence, usually opening with some version of "A lot of you have been asking about this, so here's the answer.", followed by a well-formatted list of questions and answers.
Answering objections in your emails is the right thing to do, but I propose that we rethink what goes into each launch email.
Or as I’m calling it: story selling.
The Problem With Telling Instead Of Showing In Sales Emails
The moment you make a claim in a sales email ("I'm the best at this," "This program gets results"), your reader's brain starts building a counterargument. They may not realize they’re doing it, but it’s human nature for people to detect a sales pitch and put their heckles up. Scrutiny is the default response to a claim, especially from an experienced, smart audience like yours!
A story sidesteps that response entirely using sales psychology. This is called narrative transportation, and it means that when someone gets absorbed in a story, they stop evaluating and counter-arguing, but instead lean in & listen.
An example: The Yesteryear Novel
I noticed this reading Yesteryear recently, and the main character is genuinely unlikeable, yet I still found myself rooting for her. The story was so good that I stopped thinking about what she was doing as right or wrong, but rather simply enjoying the storyline.
Your sales emails can use storytelling to get you on the same side of the table as your audience, without them feeling like you’re selling to them and putting up guardrails in their brains.
The Three Psychological Principles Behind Story Selling
Story selling works because it stacks three things into one email instead of spreading them across three separate sends:
Narrative transportation: the reader stops scrutinizing and starts following the story
The self-referencing effect: the reader pictures themselves inside someone else's story, which moves them from "I don't think I can do this alone" to "If they can do it, I can, too"
Social proof: a person with the same fears and objections gets permission to see themselves on the other side of the problem, while you build authority that you’re the right person to guide them
You can - and should - include all 3 of these in your sales emails to lead people to a sale that they’re excited about!
How To Build A Story Selling Email
I walk through this framework with all of my done-for-you clients, and it’s probably something you’re already really close to doing.
Step 1: Find the bones of your story
This comes in a couple of parts:
Identify a problem or objection that your audience is having.
For a book coach, this might be that people don’t know how to create a character arc in their storyline. For a photographer, this might be that their clients think they need to change their bodies before booking a photo shoot.
Identify which deliverable of yours is the best fit to solve that problem
Most offers come with multiple deliverables.
Our book coach might have 1:1 storyline coaching that helps people decide which plots to keep or cut. Our photographer might have mindset meditations for their clients to help them get comfortable in their skin.
Identify a past client success story that shows that you used the deliverable to solve a similar problem
You’re an expert in your field! Think of a story where someone used your deliverable, and list out the outcomes that happened as a result. Think both short and long-term here.
Step 2: Turn it into a story
Now, we get to draw the line between the problem or objection your potential clients have, and show them how you get them the transformation they desire.
The end of your story should be your clients’ transformation, not that they purchased from you. Just keep telling outcomes, and encourage your readers to get the same results by taking the first step (that’s working with you!).
Now, keep doing it over and over!
You can use the formula below to identify stories for every objection or deliverable inside your offer!
Remember: Most email lists have a 40% open rate
In other words, most people don’t see every email you send. So if you have one very important piece of information and only put it in one sales email, 60% of your list didn’t see it.
Or if you have emails dedicated to FAQs or social proof, but no FAQs (objection handling) or social proof in your other emails, then people won’t see how you become part of their success.
A story selling email folds the objection, the proof, and the transformation into a single send, so more people see all three at once. And more people see all three, period.
How To Apply This To Your Own Launch Emails
Try this before you write your next sales sequence:
Name one objection your audience has to working with you
Identify the part of your offer that solves it
Choose a past client whose situation matches your current audience (not just any client, the closest match)
Write the story: where they started, what changed when they worked with you, what's true for them now
Close by naming the transformation available to the reader, then give them the call to action
Remember: show, don’t tell. Show them through imagery and storytelling how they can get the transformation your offer provides.
Key Takeaways
FAQ and social proof don't need separate emails. A single client story can carry both.
Stories work because they bypass scrutiny (narrative transportation), let readers picture themselves succeeding (self-referencing effect), and prove you've done this before (social proof).
Keep the ratio in mind: mostly story, a couple of sentences on the offer itself.
